Belly dance like any other dance style has its own basic techniques. It is not enough just to sway your hips and move your feet since this would look uncoordinated. Belly Dance is  a performing art which can be executed gracefully and with the right projection so that one would not be misunderstood as a cabaret dancer.Mastery of the essential and basic dance steps make belly dance a respected performance that would captivate the audience for its disciplined routine.
Learning the basic steps in belly dance means gaining mastery of the four essential moves that every belly dancer should know. The dancer can gradually introduce additional variety only after one has perfected the fundamental routines. Nevertheless, it is highly suggested to practice regularly the basic moves until consistency in performing the routine is achieved. The Four Basic Moves are:
1. Basic Staccato Hip Moves
The Basic Stance may seem basic but requires discipline in maintaining a good poise starting from the standing position. The feet should be flat on the ground with body weight distributed so balance is maintained. For the dancer to effortlessly change positions, the knees must be bended lightly while the toes are pointed forward. The staccato hip steps involves hip twist, Hip bump as well as Up and Down Hips.
2. Basic Rolling Hip Moves
The Basic Rolling Hip Moves requires hip movements that rotate to form horizontal 8 through various vertical and horizontal movements. This exercise also features basic hip circle and vertical hip circle.
3. Basic Ribcage Circles

This dance step is more advanced since no movement should be made from the waist down. The ribcage is isolated to move on its own by maintaining straight leg stance.
This basic step includes horizontal ribcage circles, diagonal ribcage circle, vertical ribcage circle with undulation.
4. Basic arm, Shoulder ,and Head moves
Part of this routine are movements done by the arms such as arm waves, snake arms and even head slide. Usually, the graceful motion of the arms that forms semi-circles are carefulyl given attention to produce smooth movements that can highly affect the routine
